Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
