At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.
Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities said a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, along with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by various security forces comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.
