Bluefin Fish Fetches Historic Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates outlets domestically and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds fortune," commented the entrepreneur, a regular participant at the annual January sale.
Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is noted for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This most recent purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one elated diner.
