"When are you speaking to the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Several celebrated admirers have also begged for the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close gang. Their visuals frequently show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But the band will forever be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
